I have BIG news. umm so after our fabulous meeting on friday I was COMPLETELY inspired and sent out emails to bay area culinary hot spots about summer jobs/internships. one of my emails is to this woman who started bittersweet which is a big deal chocolate place in the city and happens to be a princeton alum. SO….she emails me back saying they just got named the “chocolate curator” for slow food nation so they are in charge of ALL the chocolatiers attending and could definitely use a summer intern. which is now me. so excited. all my slow food dreams are being realized. haha. I plan on bringing back some hard core chocolate to do a little tasting at our meeting after break! we are def doing some celebrating!
Speaking of chocolate, if anyone is in the Bay Area, places to check out:
Go To Chocolate: http://www.gotochocolate.com
–not actually a place, persay, but he has a little kitchen in San Carlos where he makes the most delicious caramel and toffee. His collections are also wonderful. He sells at the CSM farmers market and you can also place an order and pick it up. This is where I “interned” over Christmas break and learned all about making chocolate.
Shokolaat (University Ave and Cowper in Palo Alto)
–wonderful local/organic menu with delicious desserts (chocolate!)
Sharffen Berger
–Their chocolate is everywhere, but you can tour the original factory in Berkeley. It’s a big brick building that I think used to be a pickle factory. The tours are free and the cafe there has amazing food.
Fog City News (http://www.fogcitynews.com/home.html)
–This is a little newstand on Market St. with tons of information and chocolate – they have local chocolate and chocolate from around the world. My dad met a guy at a dinner party who just finished up a book on chocolate and this is what really got him started with the research.
The guy my dad met has done a lot of research and I’m planning to pick up his book when I have a break from academic reading. If anyone’s interested, check out: http://www.hauntedbychocolate.com/book.htm. Auerbach is this big name in paranormal research, I guess, and now has decided he’s interested in chocolate. He was the one who introduced my dad to Vosges’ Black Pearl Bar. Mmmm….
wow..so much chocolate..this is amazing!!! and congrats on the internship Elena! Rock on. I’ve just emailed the lady about a French cooking demonstration/class, however she hasn’t emailed back so I’m not entirely sure what’s up, but hopefully everything will work out! Here is her website if anyone is interested in taking a look:
